The Swansea.com Stadium, formerly called the Liberty Stadium, is a big place where people sit to watch sports and have conferences. It’s in Swansea, Wales, and they use it for rugby and football. They opened it in 2005 with room for 20,750 people, but they made some changes, so now it fits 21,088.
Swansea City, a team in the EFL Championship, and the Ospreys rugby team both use this stadium as their home. Swansea City took control of the stadium in 2018. In 2011, when Swansea City got promoted, the stadium became the first Premier League stadium in Wales. It’s the third biggest stadium in Wales, after the Millennium Stadium and the Cardiff City Stadium. In European competitions, they call it Swansea Stadium because of advertising rules.
Swansea City used to play at Vetch Field, and the Ospreys played at St Helen’s and The Gnoll. But those places were old and not good anymore. Both teams didn’t have enough money to build a new stadium. So, the Swansea council and a group of developers came up with a plan to make a new stadium with 20,520 seats. They put it on the west side of the River Tawe, where the Morfa Stadium used to be. The council paid for it with a big retail park on the east side of the river. The whole project cost more than £50 million.
They opened the stadium on July 10, 2005, and it became the new home for Swansea City and the Ospreys. It was officially opened on July 23, 2005.
On October 18, 2005, a company from Swansea called Liberty Properties Plc got the rights to name the stadium, and they called it “Liberty Stadium.” But in UEFA matches, they call it “Swansea Stadium” because of the rules about sponsorships.
On May 8, 2015, they changed the name to “The Katie Phillips Stadium,” but it was just for one night. Then, on August 9, 2021, they changed it again to “Swansea.com Stadium” because they made a 10-year deal with Swansea.com, a company that has the same director as Swansea City.
